The 5 best bars in Thao Dien, Saigon for 2026: live jazz, riverside, garden

Five places for an evening out in Thao Dien, across the Saigon River from District 1, ranked by how many Google Maps reviews they have: a Japanese dining lounge facing Landmark 81, a restaurant-bar right on the water, a garden bar, a speakeasy with a jazz band and the jazz club saxophonist Tran Manh Tuan built. Each entry covers the hours, the music, where to sit and who it suits.

Updated 23 Oct 2026 · 5 venues · ranked by number of Google Maps reviews

Thao Dien is the expat-heavy neighbourhood on the far bank of the Saigon River, looking across to Landmark 81. Since 1 July 2025 all five addresses in this guide officially sit in An Khanh Ward, Ho Chi Minh City. Until then, CLAY, Xào Xạc, Dram and Saxn'Art belonged to Thao Dien Ward and Hoshiyo to the old An Khanh Ward, both then part of Thu Duc City, the area most people in Saigon still call District 2. Four of the bars sit around the core of the neighbourhood: Dram on Dang Huu Pho, Xào Xạc down a lane off Street 47, CLAY at the end of Street 6 on the riverbank and Saxn'Art deep in alley 188 Nguyen Van Huong. Hoshiyo stands a little apart on Street 29, near Tran Nao. When you order a ride, type the venue name, because the same bar may appear under both the old and the new ward.

None of the five is a club or has a dance floor. This is a neighbourhood for listening to jazz, eating well, talking in a garden or watching the river, and the hours follow that rhythm. CLAY opens first, at 3 PM, with time to spare before sunset over the water; Hoshiyo and Xào Xạc open at 5 PM and Dram at 6 PM. Saxn'Art only operates on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings, from 8:30 PM until 11 PM, the earliest finish in the group. Most of the others call it a night at midnight; at weekends Xào Xạc carries on until 1 AM, and Hoshiyo's own website lists its lounge running until 1 AM, although Google Maps says midnight. If you searched for an acoustic bar in Thao Dien, know this up front: live music here is mostly jazz played on real instruments in small rooms, not a line-up of singers taking turns all night.

1. Hoshiyo Dining Lounge — Japanese dining lounge facing Landmark 81, violin early, DJ late

  • Address22 Đường 29, Phường An Khánh, TP.HCM
  • Hours17:00 – 00:00
  • TypeDining Lounge
  • Google Maps★ 4.9 · 6,463 reviews

Hoshiyo is at 22 Street 29, on the old An Khanh side near Tran Nao, so it is a little further from the heart of Thao Dien than the other four. The frontage gives nothing away: the way in is a lane beside a pickleball court, and from the street you would never guess what is upstairs. Only on the dining floor do the big windows open onto the river, Landmark 81 and Saigon Marina beyond, under a ceiling dotted with tiny lights; the name is Japanese for a starry night (星夜). Google Maps lists 5 PM to midnight daily, while the venue's website splits the evening into dinner from 5 PM to 10 PM and lounge from 10 PM to 1 AM, so ask about closing time if you plan to stay late. There is parking.

Evenings here run in two halves. Early on it is a Japanese dinner of sushi, sashimi, scallop chawanmushi and wagyu rolls with a violinist playing; later, according to a 2025 Trip.com feature, a DJ takes over and dancers perform, and on some nights a saxophonist plays live as well. There is no fixed published music schedule, and the Wednesday Lady Night promoted in early 2025 may since have changed. People book it for birthdays, anniversaries and even proposals, and the team will decorate the table and arrange a cake if asked ahead. When you book, ask for a seat by the glass and say whether you are coming for dinner or only for the lounge after 10 PM.

Best for: Couples, birthdays and anniversaries; groups after a Japanese dinner, then the lounge and view

2. CLAY Saigon — Restaurant-bar right on the Saigon River, open from 3 PM for sunset

  • Address18 Đường số 6, Phường An Khánh, TP.HCM
  • Hours15:00 – 00:00
  • TypeRiverside Bar & Restaurant
  • Google Maps★ 4.8 · 1,875 reviews

CLAY sits at 18 Street 6, at the end of a narrow lane, facing straight onto the Saigon River; it is the only place on this list where you can sit at the water's edge. According to Google Maps, where the venue keeps its own profile, it opens 3 PM to midnight every day, the earliest start in the area, so you can arrive while the sun is still up and stay on through dinner. A few older articles gave later weekend hours, until 1 AM, so double-check when you book. The whole place runs on earthenware tones: clay walls, a woven rattan ceiling, pottery and wood among palms, coconut trees and cacti, a look that earned it Design of the Year at the 2023 Vietnam Restaurant & Bar Awards (Vietcetera). Cars struggle in the lane, so a motorbike or taxi is easier.

Most people come for the food and the river. The kitchen is open and cooks over a wood fire, with Asian influences and a set menu that changes with the season; Vietcetera has mentioned black cod and beef tartare, and recent guests talk about foie gras, fish and steak. CLAY publishes no DJ line-up or music style, evenings have background music only, and one guest felt the late-night playlist missed the mark, so treat it as a place for a long, slow evening by the river rather than a party. Outdoor tables look straight at the water, with the odd barge drifting past; when it rains the outdoor area is limited and you move inside. For a riverside table at sunset, book and arrive early. Private parties and events are also taken.

Best for: Sunset dates, family dinners and friends who want an unhurried evening on the riverbank

3. Xào Xạc Bar — Garden bar down a quiet lane, veranda sofas, open to 1 AM at weekends

  • Address1 Đường số 47, Phường An Khánh, TP.HCM
  • Hours17:00 – 00:00 · Fri, Sat, Sun until 01:00
  • TypeGarden Bar
  • Google Maps★ 4.7 · 517 reviews

Xào Xạc hides down a quiet lane. Google Maps pins it at 1 Street 47, while one guide site gives 39/5 Street 59, so let the map lead you there. From Monday to Thursday it runs 5 PM to midnight, and on Friday, Saturday and Sunday it stays open an hour longer, until 1 AM. In daytime it is a café, and the evening brings out the bar list. Indoors there is a counter built like a planted glass tank under soft light; outside, a breezy tropical garden, a covered veranda with sofas and high tables, and small corners tucked behind the leaves. Cars struggle in the lane, but staff come out to help park motorbikes. Pets are welcome too: one guest who turned up with a cat found a water bowl set out for it.

This is a place to talk: no DJ, no dance floor, music kept low, and on some nights someone plays an acoustic set. The drinks revolve around herbs and flowers, and the staff behind the counter ask about your taste before they mix; a few guests found them on the sweet side, so say if you prefer things lighter. Food is simple: crispy corn fritters, fries and brownies. Now and then the bar throws a seasonal party, such as this year's adults-only Mid-Autumn celebration. As a couple, take a garden corner; for recommendations, sit at the counter; a small group should ask for a veranda sofa. Saturday is busiest around 10 PM, and without a booking a table is hard to come by.

Best for: Date nights and pairs who want a quiet garden corner to talk until late

4. Dram Bar — Dang Huu Pho speakeasy: a jazz band some nights, plus billiards

  • Address2 Đặng Hữu Phổ, Phường An Khánh, TP.HCM
  • Hours18:00 – 00:00
  • TypeJazz Bar
  • Google Maps★ 4.9 · 341 reviews

Dram is at 2 Dang Huu Pho, right in the middle of Thao Dien, sharing its compound and street number with Stoker, a wood-fired grill restaurant, so ask for the Dram entrance when you arrive. It is open 6 PM to midnight, seven days a week. Inside it plays the speakeasy part well: low amber light, a warm, enclosed room and deep seats. Beyond the main area around the counter and the band corner, there is a separate room with a billiards table, a smoking corner set apart from everything else and a small side room for people who like curated drinks. Dang Huu Pho has plenty of side lanes, so a taxi or ride-hailing car saves you getting lost.

The main reason to come is jazz from a band playing in the room on a few nights each week. Sources disagree on which nights: one guide lists Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, another only Tuesday and Thursday, and the bar has not posted its own schedule, so if you want music, ask for that week's nights when you book. The staff behind the counter like to explain what goes into each glass and will build one to your taste; the snack people mention most is truffle fries. Expect tax and service on top of menu prices, so check the total before ordering. If you want to sit close to the band, reserve early for a jazz night, and mention it in advance if your group wants the billiards room.

Best for: Weeknight jazz lovers, and friends who want music with a game of billiards

5. Saxn'Art Club — Jazz three nights a week with saxophonist Tran Manh Tuan; book ahead

  • Address188/BB4 Nguyễn Văn Hưởng, Phường An Khánh, TP.HCM
  • Hours20:30 – 23:00 · Fri, Sat, Sun
  • TypeJazz Club
  • Google Maps★ 4.7 · 142 reviews

Saxn'Art, often spelled Sax n' Art, is deep in alley 188 Nguyen Van Huong at house BB4; cars can get in and park, though from District 1 it is a fair trip. The club dates back to 2005, and if you see 28 Le Loi, District 1 in an older guide, that is where it used to be, not where it is now. Opening is narrow: only Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings, doors at 8:30 PM and closing at 11 PM, with Monday to Thursday dark. The club's website lists shows from 9 PM to 11 PM, so arrive around 8:30 PM to settle in before the band starts. The room is dim and warm with comfortable seats and a full bar, and guests rave about the acoustics.

Each night has its own programme name. Tran Manh Tuan, born in Hanoi in 1970, a Berklee graduate who has taught at the city's conservatory, usually takes centre stage on saxophone with piano, bass and drums around him. The music runs from traditional jazz, bebop and fusion to soul, blues and Trinh Cong Son songs; October 2026, for example, has a Trinh night on Friday 23 October. Beyond the shows there are jam sessions, open mics and workshops for jazz players, and now and then an overseas guest such as the American saxophonist Antonio Hart. The website says show nights require a booking and has its own payment and cancellation terms, so ask how charges work when you reserve. International visitors especially love the way the jazz here blends Vietnamese and Asian colour.

Best for: Jazz fans, overseas visitors and couples who want a proper listening night at the weekend

How to choose

New address, old name

Every address in this guide reads An Khanh Ward, Ho Chi Minh City, the ward name in use since 1 July 2025. Locals still say they are heading to Thao Dien or to District 2, and older guides list Thao Dien Ward, Thu Duc City, so do not be surprised to see two versions of the same address. Streets here are mostly small lanes: Xào Xạc, Saxn'Art and the way into Hoshiyo are all down lanes, and CLAY is at the end of a narrow one by the river. Cars are awkward and parking is scarce, so take a taxi, a ride-hailing car or a motorbike; the exceptions are Saxn'Art, whose alley is wide enough for a car, and Hoshiyo, which has its own parking.

Planning an evening

At the weekend you can spend a whole evening without leaving the neighbourhood. In the late afternoon, with CLAY open since 3 PM, take a riverside table and wait for the sun to go down; eat there, or move to Hoshiyo, open from 5 PM, for a Japanese dinner facing Landmark 81. From Friday to Sunday, head to Saxn'Art around 8:30 PM for the band until 11 PM. After that, two places run past midnight: Xào Xạc until 1 AM at weekends, or back to the Hoshiyo lounge, which its website says runs until 1 AM. On weeknights Dram is the anchor: arrive after 6 PM, check beforehand which nights the band plays, and stay until midnight. If you want a dance floor, you will need to cross back to District 1, because none of these five has one.

Choose by music and group size

For serious jazz: Saxn'Art at the weekend, or Dram on its band nights, usually given as Tuesday and Thursday. For quiet music you can talk over: Xào Xạc, with a light acoustic set on some nights. For a violinist at dinner and a DJ later: Hoshiyo. For background music and river views: CLAY. As for numbers, a couple fits a garden corner at Xào Xạc, the counter at Dram or a window table at Hoshiyo; a mid-sized group should ask for a veranda sofa at Xào Xạc or the billiards room at Dram; big groups, company dinners and birthdays suit CLAY, which hosts private parties, or Hoshiyo, which decorates the table and arranges a cake when told in advance. Saxn'Art suits small groups around the little tables in front of the stage.

Booking, dress and age

None of the five publishes a dress code. Neat everyday clothes are fine at Xào Xạc, Dram and CLAY; Hoshiyo and Saxn'Art feel more polished, so dress smart. Book early in three cases: show nights at Saxn'Art, where a booking is required; Saturday at Xào Xạc; and a riverside table at sunset at CLAY. When you book, give your group size, arrival time and where you would like to sit: near the band, in the garden, by the window or outdoors.

Frequently asked questions

Where is there an acoustic bar in Thao Dien?

None of the five bars here is an acoustic lounge with singers performing all night; live music in Thao Dien is mostly jazz. Saxn'Art Club in alley 188 Nguyen Van Huong has Tran Manh Tuan and his band on the three weekend nights. Dram Bar (2 Dang Huu Pho) brings in a jazz group on a few evenings each week. Xào Xạc has a light acoustic set in the garden on some nights, and Hoshiyo has a violinist over dinner.

Which bar in Thao Dien stays open latest?

Xào Xạc runs until 1 AM on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and until midnight on weeknights. Hoshiyo's website lists the lounge until 1 AM, while Google Maps says midnight, so check when booking. CLAY and Dram close at midnight, and Saxn'Art wraps up earliest, at 11 PM.

Which ward is Thao Dien part of now?

Since 1 July 2025, Thao Dien has been part of An Khanh Ward, Ho Chi Minh City, and all five bars use that ward in their addresses. Before that, four of them were in Thao Dien Ward and Hoshiyo was in the old An Khanh Ward, both within Thu Duc City, the former District 2.

Which Thao Dien bars have a river or Landmark 81 view?

CLAY at 18 Street 6 is the only one where you sit right on the Saigon River, and its outdoor tables are at their best at sunset. Hoshiyo at 22 Street 29 looks across the river to Landmark 81 and Saigon Marina through large windows. The other three are tucked into lanes with no river view.

What is a quiet bar in Thao Dien for a date?

Xào Xạc is the clearest pick: garden corners hidden by leaves, low music and no dance floor. CLAY suits an early-evening date by the river. Hoshiyo works for special occasions such as anniversaries or proposals, though it gets louder once the DJ starts. Dram and Saxn'Art are small, warm rooms too, but on band nights you will be listening more than talking.

Do I need to book a Thao Dien bar at the weekend?

Yes. Saxn'Art requires bookings for show nights. Xào Xạc is busiest around 10 PM on Saturday, and the riverside tables at CLAY and the window seats at Hoshiyo go first around sunset.

Are there clubs or dance floors in Thao Dien?

Not on this list. All five are bars for sitting down: jazz, dinner, conversation. The closest thing to a party is Hoshiyo, where a DJ and dance acts appear late in the evening according to Trip.com, but it is still a lounge without a dance floor. For a proper club, cross the river to District 1.
